Docker Spurr eager to atone next season

Fremantle defender Lee Spurr says the club's pre-season campaign has been gruelling so far, but it has helped improve the team's overall fitness.

Fremantle defender Lee Spurr knows he'll have to start the 2015 AFL season with a bang if he is to make up for the mini form slump that struck him earlier this year.

Spurr was in the selection gun after the Dockers suffered losses to Hawthorn, Sydney and North Melbourne between rounds 3-6, but the 27-year-old regained his mojo to help Fremantle lock up a top-four berth.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has driven his team hard this pre-season following the Dockers' straight-sets exit in the finals, and Spurr has set high standards for himself.

"Personally I thought I had a bit of a slow start to the year," Spurr reflected.

"So I am looking to have a really big pre-season and come out and start really strongly and improve - also in the leadership.

"I have been in the leadership group for one year and I want to improve those qualities and learn off the players such as Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands and Luke McPharlin, who have been leaders at the club for a long time.

"Training has been gruelling so far, and it is only going to tougher and we're looking forward to the challenge."

Although star midfielder Nat Fyfe and defender Garrick Ibbotson are still on the comeback trail from shoulder surgery, Spurr said the overall squad was in good shape.
