Dog chews dead owner in Victoria

Police performing a welfare check on a Victorian man found he may have died four weeks earlier and had been alone with his starving dog.

A starving dog is believed to have chewed the legs of its dead owner until the man's body was found four weeks later in his Geelong home.

Police found the body on Tuesday while performing a welfare check on the man, whose death is not being treated as suspicious.

Geelong Council says its officers, who attended the Norlane home with police, were shaken by what they saw and would be offered support.

The dog has been detained and will undergo an assessment to determine its future.

Councillor Kylie Fisher said the news of the man's death was a timely reminder to check on elderly neighbours.
