Dog leads NSW rescuers to missing man

A missing 83-year-old man's English Staffy has helped lead rescuers to his owner after he disappeared in the NSW Blue Mountains.

An elderly man's English Staffy has proved to be a true best friend, leading rescuers through dense bushland in the NSW Blue Mountains to find his missing owner.

Kiara weaved through a search area between two mountains, creeks and a ravine to help rescue his 83-year-old owner who had been missing for several days.

The Colo man is believed to have disappeared some time between Monday and Thursday, sparking a widespread search on Friday when family were unable to contact him.

Police and volunteers from Hawkesbury, the Blue Mountains Rescue Squad and PolAir narrowed the search area to within a kilometre of the man's home, but are giving full credit to Kiara for the rescue.

"Kiara started weaving in and out of bushland, leading one of the sons to the general location of the missing man, who was located conscious and suffering only what appeared to be minor facial injuries, exposure and dehydration," a statement from Hawkesbury Local Area Command said.

He was treated by search teams at the scene before being winched to safety and airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

"Kiara was rewarded by being carried back to the residence, where he received much love and respect followed by food and water," police said.

"Accolades to this faithful companion. Lassie or Skippy could not have done better."
