Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge is craving consistency as his emerging AFL side grapple with their latest setback.

The Dogs were overrun by Port Adelaide on Saturday night in a 38-point loss that leaves Beveridge's charges with five wins and five losses this season.

"We have learnt a hell of a lot about ourselves in this first part of the year," Beveridge said.

"We're five and five and ... we don't really want to take five and five, we'd like to be one or two better off on the ledger.

"And that is a great sign for our players, they have got a huge appetite to win."

The Bulldogs trailed Port by 10 points at three-quarter time at Adelaide Oval but were then steamrolled - the Power secured victory with six unanswered goals to open the final term.

"It's disappointing to see the margin blow out to what it did ... I felt for three quarters our players were enormous," Beveridge said.

"They persisted. They kept coming at Port when Port threw quite a bit at us. And we were right in it.

"In the end we just fell over. And as the year goes on hopefully we continue to get better and finish off games."

Beveridge said improving consistency was the key to Dogs maintaining finals aspirations.

"In general, it's just to be more consistent with the way we play - we know it holds up against some of the very best teams ... it's just to hone our capabilities," he said.
