Dogs hopeful of Johannisen AFL deal soon

The Western Bulldogs are hopeful star defender Jason Johannisen will choose the chance of further premiership glory with the Dogs over more money elsewhere.

The Western Bulldogs will attempt to take a leaf out of Hawthorn's book in convincing Jason Johannisen to re-sign with the club.

The Norm Smith medallist is out of contract at the end of the season and set off alarm bells earlier this year when he put talks on a new deal on hold.

But negotiations are back on in earnest, with the reigning premiers hopeful he will forego more money elsewhere - as was the case during the Hawks' recent golden era - to chase more premiership glory with the Dogs.

"We're having good discussions with Jason's management," coach Luke Beveridge told Fox Footy's On the Couch.

"There's no doubt he's become a very influential player and it's understandable that other clubs are interested.

"The Hawks for a long time had that destination club title which was very apt, they've earned that. And for us to be a club that players want to stay at, want to come to, we've got to do a lot right every day.

"We'll offer Jason a very solid contract but hope he wants to stay because he loves where he plays and he loves where he works and he loves his teammates."

Johannisen, 24, still has plenty of improvement left 71 games into his AFL career, with his speed and decision-making off half-back sure to attract plenty of suitors.
