Dogs nab Knights half Cogger for 2019 NRL

Canterbury Bulldogs have signed Newcastle Knights halfback Jack Cogger on a two-year deal but, at this stage, will have to wait until 2019 for his arrival.

Canterbury Bulldogs have landed the man to wear their No.7 jersey after signing Newcastle Knights reserve half Jack Cogger.

The only problem is, at this stage, he won't arrive until next season.

The Bulldogs confirmed the 20-year-old's signature on Wednesday morning, as new coach Dean Pay continues his search for a man to partner Kieran Foran in the halves long term.

However, it will do little to help this year's missing piece in the Bulldogs' puzzle, with Matt Frawley still the frontrunner to start at halfback.

"Cogger is officially contracted to the Knights for this coming season," a Bulldogs statement read.

"The 20 year-old has come under the guidance of Bulldogs head coach Dean Pay in recent times as part of the NSW U-20's squad."

Pay has already suggested Moses Mbye, who had an up-and-down season at halfback last year, will shift to fullback in 2018.

Reports this week confirmed Cogger's management is likely to press for an immediate release, however, the Knights have faced the prospect of being under the minimum salary cap this summer and do not need to shed players.

The former Australian schoolboys player is set to be stuck behind a long line of halves at the Knights.

Having made his NRL debut at age 18 and with eight first-grade games to his name, Cogger is unlikely to start ahead of Mitchell Pearce, Brock Lamb or Connor Watson this year.
