Richard Gasquet has upset Dominic Thiem 4-6 7-5 6-1 with the hometown hero and second seed exiting the Vienna Open in the second round.

France's Gasquet earned his second career win over the top Austrian after defeating the world number six two years ago.

The victory also means the end of a five-match losing streak for the Frenchman against top 10 opponents.

For Thiem, the loss means he will miss out on his second Vienna quarter-final since reaching the last eight in 2013.

Also on Thursday, Argentina's Diego Schwartzman knocked out Spanish fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta 5-7 6-1 6-1, a victory which helped countryman Juan Martin del Potro in his last-minute bid to reach next month's eight-man ATP Finals in London.

Former champion Jo-Wilfied Tsonga, seeded eighth in Vienna, rallied past Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in a tiebreak extravaganza 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (9-7) 6-1.

In other second-round results, German Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 7-6 (7-1), Briton Kyle Edmund put out Austrian Dennis Novak 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) while Frenchman Lucas Pouille joined Gasquet and Tsonga in the quarters after beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 7-6 (10-8).
