Donors attending a conference in Cairo pledged well above the $4 billion the Palestinian Authority was asking for.
More than $1 billion of that was promised by gas-rich Qatar alone.
International donors agreed to donate funds to help rebuild homes and infrastructure, damaged in the recent conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
At least 100,000 Gazans lost their homes in the 50-day conflict, which ended in August.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the conference he would visit the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip on Tuesday.
"I will visit Gaza to listen directly to the people of Gaza," Moon told reporters in Cairo, adding that he would also travel to Israel.
"As a part of this effort to look ahead and build a better future, I believe it is important to be on the ground,” he said.
The United States pledged more than $200 million toward the reconstruction.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said Gazans needed help urgently, ahead of the winter.
"The people of Gaza do need our help, desperately, not tomorrow, not next week, they need it now,” he said.
