Don't be afraid, it's only coal: MPs told

Treasurer Scott Morrison has waved a large lump of coal at the opposition benches, while reminding them of its virtues in providing energy security.

Treasurer Scott Morrison has mocked the opposition over its aversion to coal, brandishing a chunk of the black sedimentary rock during parliament's question time.

"This is coal - don't be afraid, don't be scared," Mr Morrison told Labor MPs on Thursday before the Speaker warned him about the use of props.

The treasurer said it was coal that had ensured Australia had enjoyed an energy competitive advantage for more than 100 years, delivering prosperity to businesses and ensuring industry had been able to remain competitive in a global market.
