Newly-independent senator Glenn Lazarus has told a "very persistent" education minister not to bother about chasing his vote for university fee deregulation.

The Abbott government needs the support of six of the eight Senate crossbenchers to have its legislation clear parliament this week.

"There's no real reason for him to come and talk to me," Senator Lazarus told ABC radio on Monday when asked whether Christopher Pyne could win over his vote.
