Don't forget about Tasmania, Turnbull told

Tasmanian Liberals have welcomed Malcolm Turnbull to the leadership of the federal party and asked him to remember the value of the island state.

Tasmania's Liberal party hierarchy has sent a reminder to incoming prime minister Malcolm Turnbull that the island state proved a valuable election ground in 2013 and should not be forgotten.

President of the party's Tasmanian division, Geoff Page, on Tuesday congratulated Mr Turnbull on his election as federal party leader, but asked the Sydney-based politician to keep his eyes focused south.

"With some of the biggest swings in the country, Tasmania delivered strong support for the Coalition and that should not be forgotten," Mr Page said in a brief statement, referring to the September 2013 poll which brought the party to power in Canberra.

Tasmanian Liberal senator Eric Abetz was a strong voice in the Tony Abbott-led administration, including in his role as leader of the government in the upper house.

But his future is uncertain with Mr Turnbull at the helm and Mr Page asked that Tasmanian representation remain strong.

"It is essential Tasmania has an effective and respected voice in the new Turnbull cabinet," he said.

"Senator Eric Abetz has been a very strong performer since the coalition came to government in 2013 in the difficult portfolio of employment, as well as being the leader of the government in the Senate."
