Paul Roos says it's wrong to question whether Mick Malthouse is the right man to coach AFL club Carlton.
Malthouse and the Blues have copped the brunt of pundits' early-season scrutiny after an underwhelming 0-2 start to the season.
Malthouse's former right-hand man Nathan Buckley and Roos both leapt to the three-time premiership coach's defence while appearing on Fox Footy.
"He's a very good footy coach," Melbourne mentor Roos said on Monday night.
"You can pick holes in all of our teams at the moment, but I don't think you can question if he's the right person to coach the club.
"He's an exceptional coach."
Collingwood coach Buckley echoed Roos' thoughts.
"We're two games in. We're going too hard, too early," Buckley said.
"He's been in the caper for 30 years.
"If you've been in it for that long, you've been in the gutter and you've been at the top.
"He's been through plenty of cycles. He knows what this feels like."
However, Buckley added it would be wrong to suggest that external pressure doesn't affect an AFL club.
"You've got to handle that," he said.
"There's a lot to manage. Because your players do absorb things and you need to know that's looked after."
Buckley captained the Magpies when Malthouse was coach then joined him in the coaches' box for two seasons before being given the top job.
Malthouse's contract expires at the end of the season, but Blues skipper Marc Murphy made his support clear on Monday.
"Mick can't kick a footy for us," Murphy said.
"There's no point listening to the speculation or getting involved with it.
"We're right behind Mick and Mick's right behind us."
