Borussia Dortmund came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw against struggling VfB Stuttgart, while Bayer Leverkusen moved up to second with a 1-0 victory over Augsburg.
Stuttgart went into Wednesday's match propping up the bottom of the table but Daniel Didavi netted twice to put Armin Veh's side in control with 22 minutes remaining on the same day the club relieved sports director Fredi Bobic of his duties.
However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit for Dortmund before Ciro Immobile levelled matters with five minutes remaining.
The draw means Dortmund are now four points behind Bayern, who moved top of the Bundesliga on 11 points thanks to a 4-0 win victory over Paderborn Tuesday as Mainz 05 missed their chance to take top spot after only drawing with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Leverkusen sit second on 10 points following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Augsburg with South Korea's Son heung-min getting the vital score for Leverkusen on 33 minutes.
Hanover 96 lie behind Leverkusen on goal difference alone thanks to a 1-0 victory against Cologne. Joselu scored the only goal of the game in the sixth minute after Jimmy Briand's initial shot was blocked.
Hertha Berlin moved out of the relegation zone as Salomon Kalou's header secured a 1-0 victory at home to VfL Wolfsburg while Max Kruse was the hero as Borussia Moenchengladbach beat SV Hamburg by the same scoreline to move up to sixth place, two points behind Bayern.
