A slew of redundancies at the Australian Federal Police last financial year cost taxpayers almost $18 million.

A total of 89 employees were made redundant in 2015/16, Attorney-General George Brandis said in response to a question on notice from a Labor MP.

Senator Brandis' department had 79 redundancies during the same period, costing nearly $5.2 million, while the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions lost 31 workers and paid out $2.2 million.
