The death of Yothu Yindi frontman, Dr Yunupingu, highlights anew the health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Dr Yunupingu died of chronic kidney disease at the age of 56.

But almost right up until his death, he was working with the Director of the Menzies School of Health Research and one of Australia's leading kidney specialists, Doctor Alan Cass, on ways to raise awareness about health issues in Indigenous communities.

Dr Cass spoke with Thea Cowie and told her why chronic kidney disease is eight times more likely to affect Indigenous people in Australia.

Dr Yunupingu's family has given permission for his image to be published.
