Police are thanking Facebook users for their help in recovering a bearded dragon stolen from a Sydney pet shop.

Officers arrested a 16-year-old boy on Thursday afternoon over the theft of the lizard from a locked enclosure at Kellyville Pets on Tuesday afternoon.

The store posted footage of the incident on Facebook showing a young man pocketing the dragon before leaving without paying, and asking anyone who knew anything of the incident to help.

Police say the appeal also led them to safely recovering the lizard at the boy's home in Rouse Hill.

He is expected to undergo youth conferencing under the NSW Young Offenders Act.
