Dragons coach to wait on new season calls

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor has dismissed speculation linking Brett Morris with Canterbury, saying he wants to extend the winger's NRL deal.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor doesn't think winger Brett Morris will leave the club but he won't be making a call on any player's future until he completes a full season review.

Morris has been linked with a switch to join his brother Josh at Canterbury but McGregor says the NSW State of Origin representative remains part of his plans at the Dragons regardless of what reports might say.

"He's under contract for next year as far as I know," McGregor said when asked about Morris's future.

"We're looking to extend him if we can."

McGregor, only appointed as full-time Dragons coach last week following a successful interim stint, says it's too early to discuss what areas he'll be looking to strengthen in the off-season.

Friday night's 30-22 loss to Brisbane makes finals all but impossible for this season but McGregor said any recruitment decisions will come following next weekend's game at Newcastle.

"I'll have a full review in a couple of weeks," McGregor said.

"Everyone keeps telling me we need a front-rower, so we must.

"Everyone said we didn't have size six weeks ago and that went away. It depends on winning or losing, it depends what everyone wants.

"I'll have a real good look at it in the next couple of weeks, have a real good look at our cap and see what we can do."

Despite the disappointment of realising any hope of finals football had all but been extinguished at Suncorp Stadium, McGregor said he is only at the start of his journey with the Dragons.

"The group hasn't been together very long," he said.

"We've got two new halves, a new fullback, new centres. A young forward pack.

"This group's only been together with me for 13 weeks, we need to improve, we know that but we've got a good group there, we need to work hard."
