After discovering just how damaging he can be, St George Illawarra powerhouse Luciano Leilua says he's set a new high mark for himself.
Leilua showcased his star potential with a match-turning performance in the Dragons' gritty and important 20-10 NRL win over Wests Tigers on Saturday.
He cracked the Tigers' line to set up Jordan Pereira's opening try, scored the match-winner himself with a powerful display of size and speed, ran 119 metres and made six tackle busts and 33 tackles.
But perhaps Leilua's most impressive feat was lasting until the 77th minute without a break.
Coach Paul McGregor says the 116kg monster - the younger brother of Canberra centre Joey - has set a new standard for himself.
"I think that's where the bar's set now," Leilua said.
"So I've got to live up to that and play with confidence and hopefully I can be a regular first-grader.
"I think it was one of my best games in first grade so hopefully there's more to come."
Since coming into grade in round 22 last year, Leilua had previously started on just three occasions.
Locked in a tussle with Tariq Sims for the starting left-edge back row spot, he's been forced to bide his time on the bench but got a start as a result of a pack reshuffle brought on by an ankle injury to Paul Vaughan.
"I was just being patient and waiting for my time and it was up to Mary," Leilua said.
"I was happy to be an impact player but he's given me a chance to start.
"I've always wanted to start and I have to thank Mary for believing in me."
