St George Illawarra have bolstered their forward stocks for next season, announcing the signing of Irish international Tyrone McCarthy.

The 27-year-old lock led Hull KR in last month's Challenge Cup final defeat by Leeds and has been one of the stand-out players for the Super League side in 2015.

He previously had a stint in Australia, winning the Queensland Cup with the Northern Pride, before returning to England where he has played 72 Super League games with Warrington and Hull KR.

"Captaining such a proud and historic club like Hull KR in the Challenge Cup final was one of the highlights of my career so far, despite the result, and I would have been very happy to stay at the club," said McCarthy.

"It's always been one of my ambitions to play in the NRL, though, and joining St George for next season was an opportunity that in the end I couldn't afford to turn down.

"I loved my time in Australia last season and I'm looking forward to challenging myself against some of the best players in the world."

His signing comes as the Dragons prepare to farewell fellow forwards Trent Merrin and Rory O'Brien at the end of the season.

Former Penrith and Sydney Roosters forward Mose Masoe will join McCarthy in coming to the Dragons from the English Super League.
