Kevin Durant has withdrawn from the US men's basketball team ahead of the FIBA World Cup in Spain, citing mental and physical exhaustion.

The reigning MVP and Oklahoma City Thunder forward said in a statement on Thursday the decision was "extremely difficult" as he took great pride in representing his country.

The news comes just five days after Team USA lost star Paul George, who broke his leg during a training camp scrimmage in Las Vegas.

"After going through training camp with USAB (USA Basketball), I realised I could not fulfill my responsibilities to the team from both a time and energy standpoint," Durant said.

"I need to take a step back and take some time away, both mentally and physically, in order to prepare for the upcoming NBA season.

"I will be rooting for USAB and look forward to future opportunities with them."

Durant has been part of the national team program for eight years.

His withdrawal leaves the US with 15 players battling for 12 spots in the final squad.

The FIBA World Cup, which features 24 national teams including Australia, tips off on August 30 in Spain.
