Dramatic drop in malaria deaths since 2000: WHO

The World Health Organisation has announced a dramatic drop in the number of deaths from malaria since 2000.

The World Health Organisation has announced a dramatic drop in the number of deaths from malaria since 2000.

Launching its 2014 report on Malaria, the WHO says between 2000 and 2013, the malaria mortality rate decreased by 47 per cent worldwide.

And it says malaria declined by 54 per cent in the African region where about 90 per cent of malaria deaths occur.

Stephen Rogerson is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne.

Professor Rogerson has told Zara Zaher, effective prevention strategies have helped reduce the number of deaths from malaria.
