A man has been charged after a crash that killed a woman and left a man injured in Sydney's inner west.

Police say the 22-year-old veered off Victoria Road, Rozelle, mounted the curb and struck a woman and man on the footpath.

The 47-year-old woman died at the scene.

The second pedestrian, a 49-year-old man, remains at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police say the P-plate driver tried to flee the scene but was detained by witnesses.

Bystanders allegedly made a citizen's arrest after the accident about 11.15am on Sunday.

One local, who did not want to be named, said the car ran one person over and flipped another person into the back of the ute.

A French tourist was also struck by a car, but survived, in the same spot few weeks earlier, the local said.

The 22-year-old man is set to face Newtown Local Court on Monday.

He has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and grievous bodily harm and failing to stop and assist.
