The Lincoln star was first linked to the sci-fi film last year, but scheduling issues reportedly stood in the way.

However, Driver is now nearing a deal to take on a villainous role in the J.J. Abrams movie, according to TheWrap.com.

Details about the character Driver has been tapped to play have yet to be released.

Casting details have been shrouded in secrecy, but rumours suggest Benedict Cumberbatch, Dame Judi Dench, Gary Oldman and little-known Irish actor Jack Reynor have all been approached about starring in the film, while Saoirse Ronan and Michael B. Jordan have both confirmed they have auditioned for roles.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set to hit cinemas next year.
