Drivers aren't getting phone message: RACQ

Driving while using a mobile phone is as bad as drink driving was 20 years ago as motorists are failing to heed safety campaigns, the RACQ says.

Using a mobile phone behind the wheel is as bad as drink driving was 20 years ago, Queensland's peak motoring body says.

The RACQ has expressed its frustration at drivers who think it's OK to talk and text while driving, despite the penalties and campaigns against it.

"Distracted driving, particularly talking or texting on a mobile, is fast becoming number one in the fatal five (causes) killing Queenslanders," RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said.

The warning comes ahead of the introduction of a double demerit point penalty for repeat mobile phone offenders in Queensland.

From next month, they'll be fined $340 and docked six demerit points.
