The chance of the ultimate selfie taken by a drone on a New Zealand ski slope is proving popular.
Tourism New Zealand has launched an un-manned aerial vehicle just in time for a cold front that is bringing much needed snow to ski fields.
While skiers and snowboarders focus on hurtling down the side of a mountain in the name of sport, the NZDronie will record a close-up portrait that pans out to include the scenery.
The short film of roughly eight seconds long can then be shared online in the usual fashion with the hashtag #NZdronie.
The dronies will be available on Coronet Peak, Cardrona, Mount Hutt and Mount Cook.
A spokeswoman said they are free and people can follow where they will be available on Tourism New Zealand's Facebook page.
A post about the drones already has 676 likes and plenty of comments.
Many of the #NZdronie' subjects are likely to be Australian skiers, given that 150,000 Aussies visited New Zealand during last year's ski season.
Tourism NZ general manager of Australian operations Tony Saunders says the drone campaign will mean visitors can show off the country's natural landscape to friends.
"New Zealand's scenery is unparalleled, so we wanted to give visitors the opportunity to show their spectacular surrounding to friends via social media, blowing a traditional selfie out of the water," he said.
The Civil Aviation Authority has no problem with the drones.
Communications manager Mike Richards says a pilotless aircraft weighing less than 25kg is considered to be a model aircraft.
