There was a lack of public interest in pursuing a drug charge against former West Coast Eagle Ben Cousins, a court has heard.

A drug charge against former AFL footballer Ben Cousins has been dropped in a West Australian court.

Police had alleged they found Mr Cousins with a trace amount of a prohibited drug, believed to be methylamphetamine, when they searched a car he was driving during a traffic stop in October.

He was charged by summons last month with possessing a prohibited drug.

He left his lawyer, Michael Tudori, to appear on his behalf in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Mr Tudori was successful in getting the prosecution to agree to discontinue the charge due to a lack of public interest.

Outside court, Mr Tudori said a trace amount of drugs was found in the boot of a car that Mr Cousins was driving but he did not own the vehicle or the drugs.

"He was driving the vehicle and a tiny bag with residue was found," Mr Tudori said.

The lawyer said Mr Cousins was happy and relieved with the prosecution's decision to dismiss the case against him.

"Ben's doing really well and he's getting on with his life," Mr Tudori said.

"He's been heavily involved with his children and just wants to put everything in the past."

Following a string of off-field incidents and substance abuse problems, the Brownlow medallist and West Coast Eagles premiership player fell from grace.

The father-of-two was suspended for 12 months by the AFL in 2007 for bringing the game into disrepute before making a comeback with Richmond. He retired in 2010.

Cousins' drug addiction has been marked by several relapses and stints in rehabilitation centres, as well as public apologies.
