Drug importing bikies to face gang squad

Outlaw bikie gangs that import the drug ice into Australia will be the target of an enhanced anti-gang squad and stricter border monitoring.

The federal budget includes $152 million over four years to disrupt the ice trade, using a revitalised National Anti-Gangs Squad.

"Outlaw motorcycle gangs and organised criminal networks are behind the bulk of importation and trafficking of illegal drugs like ice, which wreak havoc across Australian communities," Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said on Tuesday.

The government's drug strategy will also enhance border screening capabilities and extend the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program, which estimates drug use by testing sewage.

Mr Dutton said the gang squad would also target "non-traditional and emerging criminal gangs", which he said operated in some Melbourne suburbs.

The budget also includes $7.8 million over four years for the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission to develop and implement a national public register of child sex offenders.

A further $35 million will be added to the Safer Communities Fund to help installation CCTV and lighting to address crime.
