An unruly drunk has forced a Sydney-bound Qantas plane to make an unscheduled landing at Cairns.

The drunk man allegedly busted free from four sets of handcuffs two undercover federal police officers had tried to use to restrain him, Fairfax reports.

It's believed the man, thought to be in his 20s, was trying to pilfer whisky from a service area on QF24 from Bangkok to Sydney.

He reportedly shouted intermittently for hours and yelled  "turn off the f***ing light c***".

"Australian Federal Police (AFP) met the aircraft on arrival into Cairns and escorted the passenger off the aircraft," Qantas said in a statement.

Comment is being sought from the AFP.
