The federal government is considering stripping second-generation and dual-national Australians of their citizenship if they engage with extremist groups such as Islamic State.

The coalition is looking at amending laws to enable the minister to revoke or suspend the citizenship of Australians who take up arms with IS in terrorist zones including Syria.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton told the Australian newspaper "most" Australians would want the government to consider the issue while ensuring they did not render a person stateless.
