They don’t have names yet, but these adorable cubs are causing quite a stir at the Western Plains Zoo.

The three cubs, one male and two female, were born on February 28.

They’ve been assessed by zoo keepers and are now bonding with the mother, a four-year-old lioness named Maya.
Maya was brought in last year as a mate for the zoo’s male lion Lazarus.

The litter is being monitored by a camera in the lion’s den, so as not to intrude on important bonding between Maya and her cubs.

Each of the cubs performed well in their health checks, weighing in at 5kgs each.

Eager lion watchers won’t be able to see the litter for a few more weeks, until they venture out into the open with their mum.

In a release, zoo keeper Roger Brogan said Maya was doing a "wonderful job" as a first-time mother.

"“She is being very attentive and nurturing," he said.

"We’re taking a hands-off approach to allow her to fully utilise her natural mothering instincts.”
