A number of properties may have been destroyed in an uncontained bushfire burning in the NSW's central west.

Authorities have been unable to confirm the reports, but say properties have been affected by the large blaze burning east of Dunedoo towards Black Stump Way, Leadville and Coolah.

Rural Fire Service deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said the fire was moving quickly on Sunday afternoon - about 12 km/h.

"The information we have is that a number of homes have been impacted by fire in that area," he told the ABC.

"We have to get in there and have a look at that later on."

By Sunday evening, he said the fire was so big it was creating its own weather system.

People northwest of Black Stump Way and Leadville were being urged to leave towards Dunedoo or Mendooran if the path was clear.

For residents of Uarbry, Turill and Cassilis it was too late to leave, with the RFS advising them to seek shelter.

However, those east of Cassilus were urged to head towards Merriwa.

Large areas of NSW are experiencing unprecedented fire danger conditions over the weekend as a trough produces hot, dry and gusty winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a catastrophic fire danger warning for the Greater Hunter, Central Ranges and North Western regions and extreme or severe danger warnings for many surrounding areas.

Residents were advised to avoid fire-prone areas such as thick bushland or paddocks.

The Golden Highway was closed and other local routes may also be shut at short notice, the RFS added.
