- Argentinian supporters in Australia ecstatic with win
A day after Germany's record-setting offensive performance against Brazil, the two teams became the first to ever play out a World Cup semi-final to a nil-all score after 120 minutes.
Dutch fans in Sydney's Newtown from both sides were clutching each other for support as the dreaded penalty shoot out got underway.
But it was two missed penalties that gave Argentina the opportunity it needed.
Extra time still couldn't break the deadlock with fans treading a fine line between agony and ecstacy.
"I'm so not happy with penalty shootouts. I'm very very, worried," one fan told SBS.
Another said he was a nervous mess.
"It's nervewracking. [It's] very tight, very close."
Argentina won the shoot-out 4-2 as the Netherlands failed to capitalise on its first and third attempts.
One fan could not contain her devastation as she told SBS the Dutch side put up a brave performance.
"They did well," she said before breaking into tears, "they played well".
Germany will be coming off its 7-1 win over Brazil in the first semi-final when the two winners meet on Monday morning to decide the champion.
