Dutton to look at fate of Tongan brothers

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton will seek more information on the cases of two teen Tongan sports star brothers being held at Villawood detention centre.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has warned that two teen Tongan sport star brothers being held at Villawood detention centre and at risk of deportation can't expect special treatment.

Leighton Tali, 17, has been offered a deal with Wests Tigers rugby league club while his older brother Epalahame is a prop-forward at Randwick rugby club.

"The law obviously applies to everybody equally and whether they're football stars or coming here on a visitor's visa," Mr Dutton told reporters in Canberra on Thursday, indicating he wanted common sense to prevail and saying he was happy to look at the individual cases but understood there were other family members residing illegally in the community.

At an event celebrating the power of Australian sports diplomacy in Canberra Ms Bishop declined to comment on the brothers' fate.

"I'm not going to talk about specific cases," she said.
