Dwyer double helps Australia down Malaysia

Australia have maintained their unbeaten start at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, beating hosts Malaysia 3-2 in a frantic finish.

Australia's most capped hockey player, Jamie Dwyer, has bagged a brace of goals in a frantic finish as the Kookaburras prevailed 3-2 over Malaysia at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

The win, which follows the 7-0 thrashing of Canada in their opening fixture, ensures Australia remains undefeated in the pool stages of the tournament.

After a slow start, the match came to life late in the third quarter when Dwyer, named man of the match in his 323rd international, struck the first of his two goals via a penalty stroke.

He was on hand early in the fourth quarter to double the advantage, and while hosts Malaysia dragged one back through Firhan Ashari before a late goal from Dylan Wotherspoon gift-wrapped the win for Australia.

Malaysia scored a consolation goal through Tengku Ahmad.

"Tonight we mainly wanted to try and keep the crowd out of the game by scoring early," Kookaburras coach Graham Reid said.

"The idea was for us to dictate the game, making the play rather than sitting back waiting for Malaysia, as well as applying the pressure."

The Kookaburras next face South Korea on Wednesday night AEST.
