Eagles board still backing me: Worsfold

West Coast coach John Worsfold says he still has the full backing of the club's board despite the team's disastrous end to the season.

West Coast coach John Worsfold is confident his contract extension will be rubber stamped by mid-September, but he's no longer so certain about the length of the deal following his team's nightmare end to the AFL season.

The Eagles' season from hell finished on the worst possible note on Saturday night when they crashed to an embarrassing 86-point home defeat to Adelaide.

The loss left West Coast with a 9-13 record; and just three wins from 12 games at their home ground of Patersons Stadium.

The past three weeks were particularly damning for West Coast, with their combined losses to Geelong, Collingwood and Adelaide totalling 214 points.

Worsfold conceded his players appeared mentally shot against the Crows, saying they simply had nothing left to give in the farewell games of Andrew Embley and Adam Selwood.

Despite the poor season, Worsfold was confident he still had the full backing of the board.

But he isn't sure whether his preference of a two-year deal will now be granted, or whether the club's board might opt to just give him one.

"I'm sure they will take into account everything in front of them. That's their job. I have no dramas with that," Worsfold said.

"I look forward to presenting them with my ideas.

"I've probably done it six times over my coaching career so far.

"I've always had wonderful support from the board.

"They've always challenged me on things.

"They don't just sit there and say 'thanks, that's great, off you go'.

"They ask questions, they query things, they challenge you. And that's their job. And it's my job to be confident enough to have the answers."

The Eagles started the season as second favourites for the premiership.

But even with Essendon being stripped of their spot in the finals, West Coast still fell two wins short of a top-eight berth.

The Eagles were cruelled by injuries this season, but their apparent lack of effort at times was alarming.

Worsfold masterminded his team's rise from wooden spooners to preliminary finalists in 2011, and said he was confident he could lead another revival next year.

"Overall we've under performed and we'll accept that and cop the kicks, cop the criticism and listen to the feedback," Worsfold said.

"It hurts but it won't stop our drive to be a really good club.

"There's a lot of lessons to learn out of it.

"I have belief in what I can bring and that won't wash with a lot of people. That's fine.

"As I've said to the players, I've learnt massive lessons this year and the challenge for me personally is to put things into place to be better."

After the loss to Adelaide, West Coast forwards Brad Dick and Ashton Hams announced their retirements to the rest of the player group.
