Star West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern is in AFL match review trouble for a collision that flattened St Kilda opponent Blake Acres.

McGovern bumped Acres well off the ball in the first half of Saturday night's win at Marvel Stadium.

Acres was able to play out the game but match review Michael Christian is sure to look at the incident.

The Eagles had a workmanlike three-goal win over St Kilda as they search for their best form.

They improved to a 5-3 record and coach Adam Simpson said their effort has been better in the last fortnight, putting them back in the fight.

"I was really proud of our players. Winning's hard - it's bloody hard," Simpson said.

"We're definitely still building towards hopefully better footy, but you can't do that until you get the contest right.

"We've got that better and now that allows us to get on with the other parts of the game."

Elliot Yeo, Andrew Gaff, Liam Ryan, Jack Darling and Oscar Allen were stuck in a lift at the team hotel on Saturday afternoon, but it happened several hours before the match.

Yeo, Ryan and Gaff were among the Eagles' best.

Ryan personified the Eagles' current form - he was relentless with his run, but lacked polish in front of goal and only managed to kick 1.4.

"Liam's been working his backside off all year - his running," Simpson said.

"I know there will be times when he's not great in the contest and sometimes he's excellent, so he's always working on that.

"But what he does off the ball, we couldn't be prouder of someone who came with not a great work ethic.

"Now he's one of our best repeat-effort sprint, defensive off the ball runners we have, so he's come a long way."
