West Coast coach Adam Simpson has set his sights on guiding the club into a golden era after re-signing until the end of 2022.

Simpson was already contracted for 2019, but his ability to lead West Coast into second spot this season has earned him a three-year extension.

The Eagles were widely tipped to miss the top eight this year, but are now in a strong position to qualify for the grand final.

West Coast will play Collingwood in a qualifying final in Perth next week, with the winner of that match to host a preliminary final.

Simpson led the Eagles to the 2015 grand final, and they have made the finals every year since.

The 42-year-old also won two premierships with North Melbourne during his glittering 306-game career, and was an assistant coach at Hawthorn during their 2013 flag.

Now, he wants to lead West Coast to some silverware.

"We have not reached the ultimate target at this point, but we are focused on creating opportunities and an era of sustained success," Simpson said.

"We have transitioned our squad over the last 12-18 months and I am excited about the next phase of our progression."

Simpson has a 63.79 winning percentage from his 116 games in charge.

But he faces a tough challenge to win this year's flag without star duo Nic Naitanui (knee) and Andrew Gaff (suspended).

Midfielder Luke Shuey was thrilled to hear of Simpson's contract extension.

"It's great reward for him," he said.

"It's no coincidence that as a player he was a premiership player, and he was around Hawthorn when they won a premiership as well.

"It's no surprise that success follows him everywhere he goes. Hopefully we can help him out and get him a premiership at some stage here as well."

Simpson is confident star forward Josh Kennedy (shin) and Lewis Jetta (calf) will return against the Magpies.

Collingwood appear set to be boosted by the return of defender Jeremy Howe from a thigh injury, and Tyson Goldsack (knee) is also a chance after making a successful comeback in the VFL last week.
