Eagles stun Patriots to win maiden Super Bowl title

The Philadelphia Eagles have won their first Super Bowl after a 41-33 upset win over the New England Patriots.

The Philadelphia Eagles upset the National Football League's defending champion New England Patriots 41-33 to capture their maiden Super Bowl title.

It was the first Super Bowl title for Philadelphia, which went from 7-9 last season to the franchise's first NFL title since 1960.

"If there's a word (it's) called everything," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said.

"That's what it means to Eagles fans everywhere. And for Eagles fans everywhere, this is for them."

For the Eagles, who previously lost the Super Bowl in 1981 and 2005, the win capped a remarkable late-season run that many considered unthinkable when starting quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending injury in December.

Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles orchestrated the victory with the kind of drive NFL MVP Tom Brady, a five-time champion is known for.

Foles threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz late in the fourth quarter, with the tight end beating Devin McCourty on a quick-in route and holding the ball in front of him as he drove for the goal line.

The ball went over the goal line and popped out of Ertz's hands as he hit the ground. The ruling was upheld on review, for the 13th scoring possession in the game, which set a Super Bowl record for most yards total offence.

"I felt calm. I mean, we have such a great group of guys, such a great coaching staff," Foles said.

"We felt confident coming in, and we just went out there and played football."

"If they would have overturned that, I don't know what would have happened to the city of Philadelphia," Ertz said of the ruling.

"But I'm so glad they didn't overturn it."

Philadelphia missed a subsequent two-point conversion attempt to leave the door open for the Patriots with a little less than two-and-a-half minutes to play.

But in a game when both offenses moved up and down the field effortlessly, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had the ball swatted from his grasp by Brandon Graham and Philadelphia's Derek Barnett recovered the fumble.

The Eagles went on to kick a field goal to extend their lead to eight points and denied the Patriots from engineering a last-minute, game-tying drive.

Eagles Quarterback Foles was named the most valuable player after the match.

At half-time, the Eagles held a 10-point lead over the Patriots at 22-12.

Foles has been something of a journeyman in his six pro seasons, but has been spectacular in four career playoff games. He finished 28 of 43 for 373 yards and three TDs.

The Patriots seemed ready to take their sixth championship with Brady and coach Bill Belichick in eight Super Bowls.

Brady threw for a play-offs record 505 yards and three TDs.

The combined 1,151 yards were the most in any modern NFL game.

When the winning touchdown stood - so did thousands of green-clad Eagles fans who headed out to celebrate.

Justin Timberlake returns to Super Bowl after 'wardrobe malfunction'

Justin Timberlake paid tribute to music legend Prince and played it safe during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, returning to the event where he and Janet Jackson introduced "wardrobe malfunction" to the American lexicon.

Timberlake danced and sang his way through a roughly 12-minute set before a television audience estimated at over 100 million people, mixing a song from his new album and staples such as Can't Stop the Feeling that made him an intentionally known solo artist.

In an homage in Minneapolis to the state's native son Prince, who died in 2016, Timberlake played a white piano and sat beneath a projection of Prince on a screen to sing a cover of I would Die 4 U.

The only major piece of clothing that came off this time was Timberlake's jacket. In 2004, he infamously ripped off part of Janet Jackson's garment during their half-time show in Houston and briefly bared her breast.

The incident dubbed "Nipplegate" was blamed on a wardrobe malfunction. It also lit the Internet on fire with it becoming the most-searched image in Internet history at the time.

Earlier in pre-game entertainment, Pink sang The Star Spangled Banner, after taking what appeared to be gum from her mouth. It wasn't clear if she sang to a pre-recorded track. The performance had an orchestra accompaniment, but there wasn't one on the field.
