West Coast coach John Worsfold admits the club's medical staff will need to keep a close eye on Nic Naitanui over the coming weeks, with a premature end to the ruckman's AFL season not out of the question.
Naitanui, who underwent off-season groin surgery, has been battling a sore back in recent weeks, the ailment limiting his influence in games.
The 23-year-old tallied 12 possessions, 26 hit-outs and a goal in Sunday's 34-point loss to Sydney.
But the 2012 All-Australian has looked restricted in games and his explosive pace has only been on display in short bursts.
Although West Coast are now only a long shot to reach the finals, Worsfold said it was too early to start planning entirely for next year.
But he hinted there were a few players who may not see out the season, with Naitanui one of the players in that category.
"Each player is assessed on their merits, on where they're at, what the risks are of playing on if they're carrying injuries, or if they can't perform at a certain level with injuries," Worsfold said.
"So we'll assess all the players in that regard.
"There's no secret that we're monitoring Nic to see how he's travelling.
"We'll keep an eye on how he's pulled up from (Sunday) and things like that and there's a few other players in similar boats."
Star on-baller Daniel Kerr is a chance to return for Sunday's clash with the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium after starring in the WAFL on Saturday.
Although the 30-year-old was reported for a high bump while playing for East Fremantle, the incident was considered minor and the Eagles were hopeful he'll escape suspension.
Scott Selwood is also a chance to return after making a quicker-than-expected recovery from a fractured thumb.
But fellow midfielder Luke Shuey is set for another stint on the sidelines after complaining of a tight hamstring against the Swans.
Wingman Matt Rosa (back) and defender Jacob Brennan (calf) will be further assessed this week after pulling out of the match against Sydney.
