Eagles youngster in awe of Naitanui mark

West Coast defender Oscar Allen had a debut to remember after watching from close range as Nic Naitanui took a mark of the year contender.

West Coast youngster Oscar Allen says he was so mesmerised by Nic Naitanui's high-flying mark on Sunday, it took him a few seconds to snap back into game mode.

Naitanui took the mark-of-the-year contender when he soared on top of teammate Scott Lycett and 195cm Irishman Aidan Corr to pull down the speccy.

It was similar to Naitanui's mark-of-the-year winner in 2015.

This year, he faces stiff competition from Brisbane's Charlie Cameron to win the award.

Cameron produced his own contender in the round nine win over Hawthorn when he leapt over his teammate Darcy Gardiner from the side before flipping onto his shoulder as he hit the ground.

West Coast's 11-point win over GWS on Sunday was already memorable for Allen given it was his AFL debut.

But Naitanui's mark ensured it was a game he will never forget.

"It was pretty amazing," Allen said of Naitanui's mark.

"I caught myself looking for a couple of seconds thinking, 'Did that just really happen?'

"It was a pretty awesome experience.

"I was about 40m out from our own goal, so I had a pretty good vantage point of the whole thing."

Naitanui had been criticised in the lead-up to the match for a perceived lack of physicality and a lack of recent marks.

But he responded in the best way against the Giants, finishing with 15 disposals, 41 hit-outs, eight tackles, and five clearances.

"He's been receiving a little bit of criticism lately, and he really showed why he is one of the premier players in the competition," Allen said.

"He and our prime movers in the midfield really led us to the win yesterday."

Allen, who was drafted with pick No.21 last year, was recruited to West Coast as a forward.

But he played in defence against the Giants, allowing Jeremy McGovern to spend the whole game in attack.

With West Coast set to welcome back Tom Barrass (back), Jack Darling (ankle), and Josh Kennedy (leg) in the coming weeks, Allen could find himself being squeezed out of the side.

Allen said he would embrace the opportunity if selected for Sunday's blockbuster clash with Collingwood at the MCG.
