Ebola patient makes dramatic escape from Liberian hospital

Dramatic video has captured the moment an Ebola patient in Liberia escaped quarantine and led medical staff on a pursuit through a crowded market.

The man fled from Monrovia's Elwa hospital, which is overcrowded and struggling to provide Ebola patients with food and water.

Panic grips the market as crowds yell at the patient to leave as aid doctors try to convince the man to get into a nearby truck. He is finally forced to leave by doctors.

Liberia is one of the hardest hit countries in the Ebola epidemic and fear of infection is spreading faster than the virulent virus.

The video emerged as the UN was warned the world was losing the battle to contain the deadly virus.

Over the past six months the world's worst ever Ebola outbreak has killed 1,552 people in several West African countries and infected 3,062, according to the latest figures released by the WHO.

The crisis is being made all the worse by what many are calling an inadequate response from the West.

International medical agency Medecins Sans Frontieres, has said the world is "losing the battle" to contain Ebola and called for a global biological disaster response to get aid and personnel to West Africa.
