Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has made an offer to take over the insolvent German Nuerburgring race track, according to news reports.

"We have submitted an offer and we are now waiting whether it will be accepted," Ecclestone told the German Wirtschaftswoche and Handelsblatt papers in a joint interview on Wednesday.

"We believe that we can do more for the race track than others ... We want to make sure that there is a Formula One race every year in the future as well in Germany."

Ecclestone said he could not go into details of the bid and said that there are one or two other interested parties.

He said a decision could be made "within the next weeks".

The company running the Nuerburgring and its theme park filed for insolvency in 2012.

The Nuerburgring and Hockenheim have alternated in hosting the German Grand Prix for financial reasons over the past years, with the 2014 edition set for Hockenheim.

A spokesman of the insolvency administrators did not want to comment on Ecclestone's alleged bid, telling dpa: "We can not confirm anything officially and can't comment on individual bidders."
