Economy needs boost as jobless rise: Abetz

Employment Minister Eric Abetz says a rise in the unemployment rate highlights the need for the government to be able to get on with its economic agenda.

Employment Minister Eric Abetz says rising unemployment demonstrates the need to abolish the carbon tax.

The latest jobs figures showed the unemployment rate jump to six per cent in June, coinciding with a debacle in the Senate that ended with the government failing at the 11th hour to scrap Labor's tax.

The repeal legislation will return to the lower house next week.

"Getting rid of the tax is essential to rebooting the economy and promoting jobs growth," Senator Abetz said in a statement.

The jobless rate returned to six per cent, a level last touched in February and rising from an upwardly revised 5.9 per cent in May.

The rise came as more people sought work in the month and despite the number of people being employed in June increasing by 15,900.

A 19,700 increase in part-time workers was partly offset by a 3800 decline in full-time workers.

Data this week showed that while businesses have taken a downturn in consumer confidence in their stride, they are not rushing out to hire people.

Senator Abetz said a soft labour market underpins the urgent need for the government's plan to create jobs and build a stronger economy.
