Parramatta NRL recruit Liam Foran has fronted court after being charged with common assault.

The 25-year-old appeared at Gosford Local Court on Tuesday over the charge and an apprehended violence order stemming from an incident on the NSW Central Coast earlier this month.

Foran is alleged to have assaulted a relative in a dispute over money at a family gathering on January 12.

"The NRL Integrity Unit was informed of the incident earlier in January, and the club has undertaken its own internal investigation," the Eels said in a statement.

"The club is supporting Liam through this difficult time.

"As this is an ongoing legal matter, neither Liam nor the club are in a position to make any further comment at this time."

Foran, the brother of Manly and Kiwi superstar Kieran, signed with the Eels for the 2014 season after being released only six months into a three-year deal with English Super League club Salford City Reds.

Despite being considered a highly talented junior, Foran has only played 10 NRL games since making his debut with Melbourne in 2008.

He joined his younger brother at Manly for the 2011 and 2012 seasons and played seven NRL games for the Sea Eagles before joining Salford.

The halfback's case has been adjourned to a later date, however an interim AVO remains in place.
