Efforts made to save Chan and Sukumaran

Diplomats, lawyers, artists, musicians and grassroots community groups have all made efforts to save the lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

EFFORTS MADE TO SAVE CHAN AND SUKUMARAN FROM THE FIRING SQUAD:

LEGAL:

Chan and Sukumaran have lost an appeal and a judicial review of their death sentences and have been denied clemency by the Indonesian president. Their legal team had attempted a second judicial review, which was not accepted. A rare legal challenge to an administrative court against the Indonesian president's refusal to grant them pardons is pending.

DIPLOMATIC:

Australia has made more than 50 approaches to Indonesia concerning the men. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has appealed to the president publicly. Foreign minister Julie Bishop has been active on their behalf. Federal MPs signed a petition supporting the pair.

COMMUNITY:

The Mercy Campaign is a petition with around 30,000 signatures asking Indonesia to commute the pair's death sentences to life: http://mercycampaign.org/

CELEBRITY:

Archibald prize-winning artist Ben Quilty is Sukumaran's mentor and a vocal supporter. Dougy Mandagi, the Indonesian-born lead singer of ARIA-award winning band The Temper Trap is a friend of Chan. Other actors and artists have recently joined the Mercy campaign.
