An 81-year-old man has been rescued from one of Western Australia's highest peaks, which he had attempted to climb to see snow.
A State Emergency Service spokesman said the man started hiking up Bluff Knoll, which is in the Albany region and more than 1000 metres above sea level, around 4.30pm on Thursday.
Police said they were alerted about three hours later that he hadn't returned and there were fears for his welfare as temperatures were low.
Rescuers eventually found him about 800 metres up the mountain around 1am, just off the main track in a gully, after speaking with him on his mobile phone.
While he had a minor leg injury from falling over in the rocky terrain, he was able to walk down with assistance.
The SES spokesman said the man was in surprisingly good condition and happy to see his rescuers.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said the heaviest snowfall at Bluff Knoll so far this winter was on Wednesday.
The coldest month on the mountain is usually September and snow falls there 1.7 times per year on average.
The snowiest year on record was 2016 when the peak was dusted six times.
