An elderly woman has been found dead following a house fire south of Wollongong.

Her husband, who's also aged in his 90s, escaped the blaze in the coastal town of Gerringong and has been flown to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to a house around 1pm on Monday to find the home well alight.

The fire was extinguished with the woman's body found shortly afterwards.
