Two electricians have burns to the face and hands after an explosion at an electrical substation in Melbourne's north.

Two men have burns to their face and hands after an explosion at an electrical substation in Melbourne's north.

The electricians were connecting power to a new building when the explosion occurred at the Preston substation about 9am on Thursday, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade says.

The pair, aged in their 20s and 50s, were taken to hospital suffering facial burns and significant burns to their hands and WorkSafe has been notified.
