Electrical issue likely cause of NSW fire

The NSW Rural Fire Service says electrical infrastructure is the likely cause of the devastating Tathra bushfire.

Firefighters say electrical infrastructure on a small bush road is likely to have sparked the devastating Tathra bushfire.

The Rural Fire Service said in a statement on Thursday an issue with electrical infrastructure on Reedy Swamp Road, to the east of Bega, was the likely cause of the fire.

The blaze destroyed close to 100 homes, caravans and cabins on Sunday and sparked a bitter debate between the state's two firefighting agencies.

The information, compiled in a preliminary investigation, will be provided to the NSW Police, the RFS said.

Some 166 people from Tathra and its surrounds have been rehoused in temporary accommodation by Family and Community Services.

At latest count, 65 homes were destroyed along with 35 cabins and caravans.

A further 48 houses were damaged, while 810 were saved or untouched by the blaze.
