Elliott injury adds to Pies' AFL woes

Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott has suffered a hamstring injury in the last quarter of Sunday's VFL match.

A day after Matthew Scharenberg's shattering knee injury in the AFL, Collingwood have suffered another blow.

Jamie Elliott has re-injured his left hamstring in the VFL as he tries to return to the senior side for the first time this season.

In his second game back, Elliott was hurt in the last few minutes of Collingwood's eight-point win over North Melbourne at Werribee.

Elliott will undergo scans in the next day or two to gauge the extent of his latest setback.

After a back injury ruined his 2016 season, Elliott topped the club goalkicking last year with 34 in 17 games.

He was also Collingwood's leading goalkicker in 2015.

The Magpies are reeling from Scharenberg's knee injury in the third quarter of their fighting loss to reigning premiers Richmond.

Coach Nathan Buckley said post-match that they fear Scharenberg will need his third knee reconstruction, having had the operation on his left in 2014 and his right in '15.

Fellow defender Jeremy Howe was concussed early in Saturday's match and could be in doubt for Saturday night's match against Sydney at the SCG.

In the last few weeks, Collingwood have lost defender Lynden Dunn to a knee reconstruction and star midfielder Adam Treloar for potentially the rest of the season because of hamstring surgery.

Then Jordan De Goey, one of their most dangerous forwards, was sidelined for at least a couple of weeks with bone stress in a leg.

But there is some good injury news for Collingwood, with James Aish and Alex Fasolo also having their second VFL games on Sunday as they resume from injury.

Forward Brody Mihoceck has his right foot in a moon boot after he was hurt against the Tigers, but is optimistic of being available to play the Swans.

"The swelling is not too bad - I thought it was going to be worse," Mihocek said.

"I managed to get through the game and it started to hurt pretty much in the last quarter.

"I'm confident myself I can get up for next week."

Mihocek said the Collingwood players were supporting Scharenberg after his latest injury setback.

"That was the main thing - really, forget about the loss and more feel for Shaz and what he's going through," he said.

"All us boys are getting around him and I'm sure he'll attack his rehab and go from there."
